Navigating Burnout: A Coach's Honest Reflection and Call for Connection

Filing Date Jun 07, 2025 Audience 848 Byline Jovylyn Jatulan

After years of building a tennis community, a coach shares his struggles with burnout and seeks deeper engagement with his audience.

I’ve come to a pivotal moment in my journey as a coach and content creator, and it’s time to address it directly: I’m experiencing burnout.

For those who have been following my work for over 16 years, it’s essential to be transparent about how the trajectory of my career has impacted my emotional well-being.

The sentiment that best encapsulates my current state is one of loneliness. I’ve found myself in a rut, feeling stagnant and in need of a change.

The Journey So Far

Reflecting on my path, Essential Tennis began in 2009, starting as a solo venture with just a camera and microphone. By 2011, I left my coaching job to focus on building something sustainable. Fast forward to 2014, and I was ready to expand, bringing on a talented team.

By 2019, we were fully engaged, with coaches, editors, and developers collaborating to reshape tennis coaching for enthusiasts worldwide. It felt incredible to be part of a thriving collective.

However, since that peak, there’s been a gradual shift. Now, in 2025, I find myself in what feels like a full-circle moment—back to working alone in my home studio.

Confronting Loneliness

This transition back to solitude has weighed heavily on me. I miss the collaborative environment—the energy and creativity that came from working alongside my team. Watching that gradually dissipate has been a challenging experience.

I had ambitious dreams of building something even bigger, and witnessing that vision fade has contributed to my sense of isolation.

It's no surprise that this creeping loneliness has directly affected my output. Despite having over 2,000 videos on the channel, I struggled to find the motivation to produce engaging content, particularly as I wanted to avoid repeating the usual formulaic approaches.

Shifts in Content Creation

Instead of pushing through to create the next generic tutorial, I opted for sharing transformation stories of my students—real journeys with tangible results. While those videos resonate with my pride in the educational process, they also established a one-way interaction, which led to further feelings of disconnect.

The ease of producing those pieces turned into a double-edged sword. What started as an effort to keep things moving became low-investment content that didn’t foster meaningful engagement.

I want to emphasize that I’m not here to place blame; my current situation is a result of my decisions. Reflecting on these past 16 years, filled with highs and lows, has brought clarity. The relationships formed with students and colleagues, the lessons learned in leadership, and the overall experience still exceed what I ever envisioned when I first started.

A Call for Collaboration

Regardless of the current solitude, I recognize that none of what I’ve accomplished would be possible without the support of viewers like you. Your engagement—whether through likes, comments, or participation—has been invaluable.

As we shift gears, I genuinely want to create a more conversational atmosphere in my videos. It’s crucial that this platform no longer feels like a lecture but rather a space for genuine interaction. I’m striving to ensure that what I produce is designed to assist you, not just generate content.

If our recent interactions felt stagnant, I sincerely apologize. I want to know: what do you need right now to advance your tennis journey? I invite you to share your challenges and frustrations. Your feedback is critical as I work to bring new life into this space.

Looking Forward

I deeply appreciate your loyalty over the years. Every interaction has built the foundation that allows me and my team to pursue our passion for tennis education.

As I explore what’s next, I’m hopeful and excited about the potential for renewed engagement. Your stories matter to me, and they’ll guide how we shape future content.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. I’m looking forward to connecting more meaningfully with all of you.

Your Coach,
-Ian
